Lauren Price wins boxing gold at Tokyo 2020 as Team GB match London 2012 medal tally – Mirror Online

Lauren Price defeated Li Qian of China to win gold in the women’s middleweight boxing as Team GB equalled their medal tally from London 2012.

Price controlled the tempo from the first bell, unanimously winning the first round and claiming the second on four of the five judges’ scorecards.

This left Qian requiring a dominant third round or a stoppage, but the 27-year-old from Newport proved far too quick and the Chinese fighter could hardly land a glove on the southpaw in red, who claimed a dominant unanimous-decision victory

Price’s triumph makes her the second woman to top the podium in Olympics boxing for Britain after double-flyweight champion Nicola Adams.

The world champion’s medal leaves Team GB fourth in the table on 22 golds and 65 in total, making Tokyo 2020 their second-most successful overseas Olympics after Rio 2016, where they finished second with 67 gongs.

Ahead of the postponed Games, UK Sport set a target of between 45 and 70 gongs in Japan, while a forecast of 14 golds has been smashed even though many British stars suffered upsets or injuries.

Two-time Olympic champion Jade Jones was defeated in the last-16 of the taekwondo, while world champion and GB poster girl Dina Asher-Smith withdrew from the 200m with an injury.

Well done Jason Kenny!

Heptathlon prospect Katarina Johnson-Thompson also pulled out due to injury, sprinter Adam Gemili tore a hamstring on the warm-up track and shooter Amber Hill withdrew after testing positive for coronavirus shortly before the Games started.

Price – who is also a champion kick-boxer and former Wales football international – is the sixth Team GB fighter to win a medal of the 11 who travelled to Tokyo 2020.

London 2012 and Rio 2016 champion Adams was Price’s inspiration and the former flyweight was in the studio watching on.

“She (Price) had her tactics spot-on and Li just couldn’t cope,” Adams told BBC Sport. “She made it look easy – it was like watching a spar. She dealt with all the pressure really well.”

Meanwhile, Price was lost for words as she tried to to sum up her achievement, saying: “It’s a dream come true.

“It goes to show years of hard work – if you dream and work hard enough you can achieve anything.

“Thanks to everyone who supported me from starting off at eight years old and a big shout-out to everyone who has supported me. Looks like we’re getting a gold post-box outside my house!”

“This is for him and my nan. I know he was looking down on me today and all week really.

“I can’t really put it into words what they’ve done for me over the years and obviously I just love them both so much.

“I can’t wait to go back and see my nan, see everyone and show my medal off.”
