Buy 2021 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coins
One of the most anticipated releases each year, the American Gold Eagle Coin continues its decades-long run as one of the most popular bullion coins in the world, along with its silver counterpart.
The year of 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the program. In addition, the US Mint has announced a new design for the Gold and Silver Eagles to be released later this year. As the new designs are not yet ready for production, mintage began in early 2021 with the same combination of obverse-reverse from previous issues.
Coin Highlights
The 2021 1 oz Gold Eagle Design
American Gold Eagles are decorated with one of the most iconic designs to ever portray on a US coin in history, Lady Liberty striding with the rising sun on Her back, as originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907.
The design was used for the Double Eagles until they were discontinued in 1933 when the US Mint stopped the production of circulating coins made of gold.
Commonly known as a Saint-Gaudens design, the obverse of the coin features the female figure Liberty striding towards the viewer’s direction with a rising sun on Her back. She holds an olive branch on her left hand, and a lit torch on the right, as she lights a path to freedom. The Capitol Building is visible on the horizon and the whole scene is encircled by six-pointed stars.
Reverse
Two distinct reverse designs will be used for the 2021 issue. During the first half of the year, the classic design, by Miley Busiek Frost, features a bald eagle adding a branch to its nest where its mate and eaglet await. The mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are inscribed on the left and right hand of the design, respectively. Surrounding the outer rim, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is written on top and, on the bottom, it says “1 OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 50 DOLLARS”.
The new reverse design was announced in October of 2020 and is to be implemented in the second half of 2021. It was created by artist Jennie Norris, and sculpted by the US Mint medallic artist Renata Gordon. It is composed of a simple, yet highly detailed, portrait of a bald eagle’s head, intensely staring ahead. In the artist’s own words, this earnest gaze represents the “pride and wisdom passed down through generations of time”. Both inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” have been relocated to the top of the design, above the eagle’s head. The words on the outline remain the same, but are now separated by 5-pointed stars.
New vs Old
The American Gold Eagle is minted using 22-karat gold (.9167 fineness) for improved hardness and durability. Nonetheless, it is guaranteed by the US Mint to contain 1 troy ounce of pure gold, which means the Gold Eagle is slightly heavier than other gold coins from similar programs around the world (such as the .9999 Gold Maple Leafs), weighing 1.0909 troy ounces (or 33.931 grams) with a diameter of 1.287 inches (32.70 mm) and reeded edges.
American Gold Eagle Series
The United States Mint started the American Eagle program in 1986 with gold and silver bullion coins being yearly released. The program rapidly drew the attention from investors and collectors and has become the most successful bullion coin program in the world.
The astounding success of the gold and silver coins paved the way to the production of the Platinum Eagle Coins which started in 1997, and the Palladium Eagle Coins, more recently in 2017.
