The happiness of the bee and the dolphin is to exist. For man it is to know that and to wonder at it.—Jacques Yves Cousteau
A first century Roman author, naturalist, and naturalist philosopher, Gaius Plinius Secundus (known as Pliny the Elder), had many tales of the dolphins he observed. Among them was a story about a dolphin in the Lucrine Lake who made friends with a boy who, while walking along the banks to school every day, would feed it chunks of bread. It became so tame to the boy that it would allow him to hold its fin and thus arrive at school via dolphin express!

Althenaeus, in his work “The Deipnosophists,” told another tale that ended with a boy becoming the high priest of Neptune. Alexander the Great bestowed this honor upon the boy in the city of Iasus. A dolphin was so enraptured by the boy that it leapt upon the shore. Alexander the Great believed it was a divine sign.

Aelian, a Roman author and teacher of rhetoric in the 2nd-3rd centuries, wrote a compendius volume called “On Animals.” In it, he relates the story of a tame dolphin that aided one family’s business. At the harbor of Poroselene, an old couple raised a dolphin as a foster child alongside their own son. Eventually growing large enough to brave the deep sea, it hunted fish and brought them back to its human family. Sightseers enjoyed watching the boy swim with the dolphin.
Our 14k gold large pendant has a 3D look with the front and back showcasing a gold dolphin that measures 1 7/16″ tall x 1 5/16″ wide. My dream is to have a house on the beach, even just a little shack somewhere so I can wake up, have coffee, look at dolphins, be quiet and breathe the air.—Christina Applegate
Dophins have long been featured in religious images. They seem to be staring back at you with godlike eyes. Homer’s Hymn to Apollo tells of the god searching for a place to erect a temple. He takes the form of a dolphin and follows a ship sailing on the Greek sea, leaping and playing in its wake. When he sees the harbor beneath what would become his great temple at Delphi, he returns to the ship declaring, “And whereas I first, in the misty sea, sprung aboard the swift ship in the guise of a dolphin, therefore pray to me as Apollo Delphinus [Apollo the Dolphin].”
